You carry on throughout your day from coffee break to coffee break, daydreaming about the moment you can finally crawl into bed after work.

But once your head hits the pillow and your mind starts wandering, falling asleep seems near impossible.

Sound familiar? If this happens to you, you're not alone. You might be experiencing the most common form of sleep disorder - conditioned or learned arousal, sleep medicine specialist Philip Gehrman told TIME.

Conditioned arousal means that you're doing something in bed that causes your brain to associate bedtime with staying awake (i.e. scrolling endlessing through Instagram) instead of sleeping.

So why does this happen? Gehrman, an assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania, says if you can't sleep when you get into bed, it's because there is something nearby that signals your brain to stay awake. You know, the usual suspects: bedside iPhone docks or addicting Netflix queues.

Psychology Today suggested in an article that if you have trouble sleeping, to set a bedtime for yourself (and stick to it), create a relaxing bedtime routine in a screen-free zone (no iPhones, laptops or televisions), take regular exercise during the daytime and reduce stress levels with meditation or reading before bed.

Still having issues? Try speaking to your physician. Sometimes adjusted sleep schedules or side affects of medication could affect your quality of sleep.
