New York Fashion Week is no stranger to brands which are gold dust to the global glitterati, but yesterday it fell to rising star Sies Marjan to put on the glitz.

Covering his catwalk in a thick blanket of glittering crystals, Dutch creative director Sander Lak - who named his label after his father Sies, and his mother Marjan - ensured his latest showcase was a highlight on this season’s schedule with a collection which sought to shine a spotlight on his brilliance as a breakthrough talent.

Mirroring the runway, the clothes featured a glimmer of shimmer, seen in the rhinestone-encrusted ankle strap stilettos and chainmail-trimmed slip dresses. But it was the bold use of colour - a signature of every Sies Marjan collection since its inception in 2016 - which served to give the show its distinction.

“I wanted to push my own boundaries and not rely on the comfort that I feel working with some colours and fabrics and instead use shades and textures that don’t feel exactly right to me and make them work,” said Lak.

As a result, colours clashed to create a vibrant new palette, from lime green trousers paired with lilac knitwear to fuchsia and tangerine tailoring, which was off-set with bubblegum pink hued hair.

Voluminous silhouettes further exaggerated his creative vision, from imperfectly pleated shirting to full, frothy plisse confections spun from an assortment of sugary shades.

During a fashion week in which some of the industry’s biggest heavyweights, from Calvin Klein to Tommy Hilfiger, have opted out of hosting their catwalk collections in the capital, many fashion critics have been left wondering whether New York Fashion Week has lost its sparkle. But it seems Sies Marjan is here to prove them wrong.
