Boy, it's cold... now's the time to invest in a new winter coat

Men of London, it’s time to invest in a new coat. Karen Dacre tracks down the styles guaranteed to appeal to even the most reluctant male shopper

The colourful choice

While it’s not every man who will jump at the chance to dress in salmon, this pure wool coat from Reiss is among the hottest styles around this winter. Bright enough to make something of a statement without turning too many heads in the office, it’s a confident choice that works wonderfully with shades of grey and black (£285, Reissonline.com).

The Pea Coat

Once favoured by US and European sailors who appreciated its warm and hugely practical appeal, the pea coat — characterised by broad lapels and a double-breasted front and vertical pockets — is a favourite among London’s coat-buying fraternity. Perfectly smart without trying too hard, the allure of this style is that it works with everything and on everyone. All men should have one in their wardrobes (£149, Zara.co.uk).

The Old School (but still cool) Duffel

It might look like a duffel coat, it may even feel like a duffel coat, but if you can’t see the word “Gloverall” on the label it’s probably not worth the time. With more than 60 years’ experience — Gloves and Overalls was founded in 1951 — there’s certainly no brand better qualified to keep you warm this winter. Now available in a host of colours and shapes, the classic Gloverall remains the only option for anyone looking for a coat to last a lifetime. Team with brogues (£325, Gloverall.com).

The Perfect Parka

Forget everything Liam Gallagher taught you about parkas. This season, the once “mad for it” overcoat is sharper and slicker than ever. Hell, even the French have endorsed it. Available in Sandro’s first menswear store on UK soil, this shorter, slightly more tailored breed of parka looks great on a host of body shapes. And it’s deliciously warm too (£579, Sandro-Paris.com).

The Manorak

From Harlesden to Hackney, manoraks are all the rage with London’s under-25s this winter. A continuation of the trend for the fisherman’s jacket which picked up pace on the high street during the summer months, this is an informal jacket style for boys who are happy to brave the cold in the name of fashion. A great option for Lycra-fearing cyclists, the perfect manorak offers movement and comfort in a way no woollen coat ever will. French brands are masters in this field — try APC for anoraks in kaleidoscope shades. Back on British soil, this patch-pocket style by Lazy Oaf wins our vote (£125, lazyoaf.co.uk).

The Cut-the-Crap Crombie

While women are notoriously promiscuous when it comes to coat shopping — one season it’s shearling, the next it’s a belted trench — London’s menfolk tend to find what suits and then stick to it. This impeccably cut Crombie-inspired style (left) is the perfect choice for a man who is indifferent to changing trends. In short, it will never go out of style. Wear it with jeans and a jumper, or layer it over a suit (£353.17, JCrew.com).
