Yob tells judge: I haven’t got the energy to carry out work order

12 April 2012

A teenager spared jail for breaking a stranger's cheekbone in an unprovoked attack at a bus stop told a judge he was "not prepared" to carry out his unpaid work.

Drunken Nedas Alcauskas, 19, had downed three miniature bottles of brandy, large amounts of beer and other spirits before attacking student Kasub Maduwage as he sat reading a paper in Baker Street late at night.

He was given a suspended six-month sentence and 150 hours' unpaid work after admitting grievous bodily harm — but was ordered back to Southwark crown court for failing to do his community service.

Recorder Julian Baughan, QC, said he was "minded" to give him an extra 21 hours' unpaid work and asked if he was "prepared" to carry it out.

Alcauskas, formerly of Dagenham, said: "No. Because I'm homeless. I ain't got no energy for nothing like that. I ain't got anywhere to sleep. I ain't got no work and I can't travel."

The judge said he would adjourn re-sentencing so the defendant could be legally represented.
