Who will be next for the red card?

13 April 2012
Sven Goran Eriksson - England coach

His position is strengthened by yesterday's revelations and Mark Palios's subsequent resignation.

At first Eriksson seemed certain to lose his job for gross misconduct over claims that he lied when asked abouthis relationship with Faria Alam.

However, details of an attempted stitch-up by his employers would give him a strong case for 'wrongful dismissal' in an employment tribunal. The FA now knows it would be difficult to sack him without paying the estimated ?16million compensation due for the rest of his contract.

David Davies - Executive Director

The former BBC journalist is alsounder pressure. But he could keep hisjob because he was away on holiday in Spain as the scandal deepened.

However, he is partially to blame forthis escalation because it was he whomade the initial calls to Eriksson over the matter.

The FA denied allegations of Eriksson's affair with Alam after these phonecalls, then later backtracked.

Davies must explain his ambiguous understanding of Eriksson's phone conversation which led to the scandal rumbling on.

Colin Gibson - Director of Communications

Director of communications
Offered his resignation to the board moments after Palios quit. The FA will decide today whether to accept it, after observing the fall-out from Palios's exit. Gibson's position was made extremely difficult by yesterday's revelations that he tried to orchestrate a deal with a Sunday tabloid to sacrifice Eriksson and save Palios.

However, it seems unfeasible that he acted alone, so the FA must judge whether merely shooting its ' messenger' will end the affair.

If Gibson does stay, his relationship with Eriksson is likely to become even more chilly. The FA might resolve that one or the other must go.

Geoff Thompson - FA chairman

He will face awkward questions at the FA board inquiry this week over his leadership of the organisation.

He must take ultimate responsibility for allowing the situation to get so out of hand.

His judgment is also in question as heauthorised the release of an officialstatement last week exonerating Palios of 'misleading' officials over the Alam affair.
