Artist Mauro Bonacina lives in New Cross

New Cross artists like proper, south-London "boozers"; none of the minimalist, cocktail-sipping so beloved of the Hoxton set. The student bar at Goldsmiths is the place to absolutely avoid, apparently. "Like the set from Countdown and as cheerful," says one former student.

The new arts crowd also avoid the recently opened wine bars around Telegraph Hill and New Cross Gate, and head instead to pubs like the Montagu Arms ("a crazy little place" according to one young regular). Otherwise, people congregate at Moonbow's and head off to one of the myriad gallery openings, theme nights or performances at small co-operatives as far as the borders of nearby Deptford. Other favoured "boozers" are the Marquee pub (old south-London Irish) and the Hobgoblin (a run-of-the-mill "boozer", a much-used phrase in New Cross).
