Warder bungled getting help for Feltham victim

Murder victim Zahid Mubarek was left at the mercy of killer Robert Stewart by the prison officer who discovered the attack, an inquiry heard.

The racist killing took place in a cell at Feltham Young Offender Institution hours before the victim was to be released.

When warder Malcolm Nicholson peered into the cell, he saw Mr Mubarek still alive with Stewart standing over him holding a weapon.

Instead of using his radio or sounding a nearby alarm, he ran to his office to phone for help, leaving four minutes in which Stewart could have continued the assault. In a series of further errors, the wrong medical official was called to the scene. She arrived with plasters and bandages instead of a neck brace because she had not been told how badly the victim was hurt.

Stewart was removed to a cell with a basin where he washed off some of the evidence.

He is now serving life for the murder in 2000.

A public inquiry is examining how Mr Mubarek came to share a cell with a known violent racist, and whether staff were racist.
