US may launch inquiry into 'corruption' at BAE

Inquiry: Tony Blair feared the SFO investigation into BAE would damage relations with Saudi Arabia

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) is considering whether to launch a formal inquiry into alleged bribery and corruption at UK defence contractor BAE Systems.

The DOJ is trying to establish if it has the jurisdiction to examine payments allegedly made to win contracts from foreign governments, The Times reported.

The decision sparked criticism from the US government and a raft of international agencies.

The Times report said solicitor general Mike O'Brien said the SFO had met the DoJ to discuss the bribery allegations.
