Security, construction and budget chiefs will advise Mr Cameron on every aspect of the 2012 plans in a bid to ensure that they are on time and on cost.

The Tory 'Olympics Oversight Committee' will be chaired by Sir John Ritblat, the former Chairman and Chief Executive of British Land.

Mr Cameron said: "We want these to be the best Games ever, and our ambition is that they benefit London and the whole country.

"That is why it is so important that we get things right. We are forming this committee to make sure the Olympics are a success and that they leave a positive legacy."
