Tories pledge new powers on unruly pubs

12 April 2012

New measures to close down rowdy pubs and clubs were promised by the Tories today.

Councils would get simpler procedures to take action against venues where fighting and other unruly behaviour is fuelled by irresponsible drinking.

The plan was outlined in a draft manifesto chapter. Other measures include stricter licensing rules and allowing councils to impose a tax on late-night venues and off-licences to contribute to the cost of policing.

Duties would go up 60p on super-strength beers, and fines doubled for shopkeepers who sell alcohol to children.

Shadow home secretary Chris Grayling said: "It's time we took back control of our town and city centres on a Friday and Saturday night."
