Toddler found dead on beach

Philip Nettleton12 April 2012

A police investigation was under way today after the body of a two-year-old child was found dead on a beach.

A huge search was launched after the child was discovered at a popular tourist spot by a member of the public.

Details were initially sketchy about how the unidentified child, of Caribbean or African origin, died, and if he or she had suffered any injuries.

Officers would not discuss if a murder hunt had been launched and say they are keeping an open mind.

However, coastguards are trawling the sea at Coppet Hall Point near Tenby, in Pembrokeshire, South Wales. Officers are also investigating whether the body was washed up by the sea on to the beach.

Police are looking for other bodies along the shore or in the sea although they say they have no information to suggest there are others.

Some reports said the child, who is understood to have been there for hours rather than days, was found in a buggy, but detectives refused to confirm this. Other reports say the body was found in a rockpool, a short distance from the buggy.

Police have appealed for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
