Ticket prices soar as fans rush to get in on Whoopi Goldberg’s Sister Act

Record takings: Whoopi Goldberg is playing Mother Superior for a limited period at the Palladium

Fans are paying hundreds of pounds for tickets to see Whoopi Goldberg in Sister Act with a surge in online searches for the show.

The main box office of the London Palladium has enjoyed record takings for a musical since the Hollywood star's first night last week.

A spokesman for producers Stage Entertainment said: "We always knew that Whoopi as Mother Superior would give us a boost but what we've seen at the Palladium is totally unprecedented.

People are queuing from before dawn for day seats — some people are even camping out overnight, and some even remain in the returns queue long after curtain has gone up in the hope of getting a ticket."

Viagogo, an internet ticket marketplace, also reported a huge rise in interest in the production for which Goldberg has received rave reviews.

A pair of tickets for the stalls is trading at £200 — triple the price of a few days ago. The company predicts that prices could go as high as £300.

Edward Parkinson, Viagogo UK director, said: "It's almost 20 years since Whoopi Goldberg starred in the film yet demand to see the American star has accelerated dramatically in the past week since critics posted glowing reviews on her West End debut."
