Threats of winter power cuts loom

BRITAIN‘s biggest manufacturers including Rio Tinto and Alcan are being urged to ration power or face blackouts this winter, reports the Sunday Times.

National Grid Transco, the gas and electricity distributor, is pressing its biggest customers to sign 'turndown' contracts in return for big payouts if power cuts need to be made.

Under the contracts, the companies agree to have their power cut by a specified amount with just a few hours notice. The move has been prompted over fears that Britain faces a particularly cold winter.
