The great British car rip-off

Britons are still being ripped off over new car prices, a fresh government report reveals today.

The Office of Fair Trading report says showroom prices have dropped by around 10 per cent since March 1999 - but when allowances are made for exchange rate movements, the gap between UK and Continental prices has "not narrowed proportionately".

The OFT found that new car prices in the UK were still 10 per cent higher than in Germany, and 20 per cent higher than some in France.

? Secret talks between MG Rover and Far East car giant Brilliance could see the first Chinese-built cars on Britain's roads by the end of the year, sold in showrooms with the Midland firm's models.

An MG Rover spokesman today said the talks - believed to have led to a trade and development agreement - were "advanced".
