The Great Brawl of China

13 April 2012

A friendly soccer match between Queens Park Rangers and the China Olympic team ended in chaos after a 50-man kung-fu brawl.

The incident is a severe embarrassment for both Championship side Rangers and Premiership champions Chelsea FC, who had invited the team over.

One Chinese player was left hospitalised with a suspected broken jaw.

The match was abandoned by Premiership referee Dermot Gallagher with QPR leading 2-1.

Violence broke out when a QPR player was fouled and a mass brawl erupted around two men at the Harlington training ground.

The match against the Chinese under-23 side, who played Chelsea on Monday, was organised by QPR manager-John Gregory.

A witness-said: "It was mayhem. One of the Chinese players fouled Pat Kanyuka [a QPR defender] and another one appeared to kick him on the ground.

"Then all hell broke loose with players, substitutes and coaches fighting. It was like a war, there were punches and even kung-fu style kicking.

"There must have been 50 people involved - the only one to keep out of it was John Gregory."

He said when the QPR players walked off the pitch, two Chinese players were out cold.

The Football Association said it would investigate if the incident is reported by the referee. No complaint has been made to the police.

China's youngsters have courted controversy since their arrival at Chelsea's training headquarters in Cobham last week. A foul by one of their players on Blues teenager Michael Woods in Monday's game also sparked angry confrontations.

A match against Brentford next week is now in doubt.
