New York's Staten Island Ferry was bathed in pink as millions across the world watched a 100-minute total lunar eclipse, the longest for 11 years.

The phenomenon, in which the moon turns red and its surface is entirely covered by the earth's shadow, was seen clearly in Australia, Asia, the US and parts of Europe, but many Londoners missed out because of cloud cover.

The next total eclipse of the moon will be on December 10.
