Taxes high enough, poll tells Brown

Chancellor Gordon Brown faces a struggle to convince voters that his decision to raise taxes will bring better public services, a poll showed today.

Most believe tax levels are already high enough to fund schools and hospitals. However, a clear majority of Labour voters believe the extra cash raised so far has been well spent.

The telephone poll of a thousand adults, by Populus, found that 52 per cent of people oppose the planned one per cent rise in National Insurance contributions, due next month.
