Syria calls for refugees' return as Angelina Jolie requests visit

Syria's government is calling for the return of thousands of refugees who fled to Turkey to escape a military crackdown on their town.

Information minister Adnan Mahmoud claimed security, electricity, water and communications had been restored to Jisr al-Shughour. He said the Syrian Red Crescent had been asked to coordinate with Turkey to guarantee the return of refugees.

Some 8,500 Syrians have crossed the border and sought refuge in camps after soldiers entered the town to tackle "armed groups". Fleeing residents say it was targeted because an uprising took place, and the army has been looting homes and burning crops. Units were spreading out into surrounding hills and villages today.

The authorities said they were preparing a military operation to restore security in Maarat al-Numan, south-east of Jisr al-Shughour. Tanks and troops were reported to be on the move.

Meanwhile Turkey says an application has been made on behalf of Angelina Jolie, goodwill ambassador for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, to visit those who have fled the violence.
