Support for more 'spin'

The new head of the civil service today backed Labour's moves to bring more political advisers and spin doctors into Whitehall.

Sir Andrew Turnbull, who takes over as Cabinet Secretary in September, said ministers' aides had given the civil service "an invaluable injection of new ways of thinking".

His welcome is in contrast to the warnings of present Cabinet Secretary Sir Richard Wilson, who has demanded a legal cap on the number of ministerial special advisers. The Government is considering the request.
