Sunbeds kill 'two a week'

About two people die each week from skin cancer caused by lying on sunbeds, according to a new study.

Six per cent of the 1,600 deaths a year from malignant melanoma - the most lethal form of the disease - are linked to artificial tanning, according to Newcastle General Hospital.

Researcher Dr Brian Diffey said people should be discouraged from using the beds but he stopped short of calling for an outright ban.

He said the death toll was small compared with deaths from smoking and alcohol. His report follows calls for sunbeds to be banned at all council-run leisure centres.
