Standard readers help to bring home crash victim

12 April 2012

The family of a man critically injured in a Bali motorcycle crash has thanked Evening Standard readers for their "phenomenal" generosity in giving more than £3,000 to help fly him home.

Donations poured in after we reported fears that Richard Plummer, left in a coma, would not recover unless he returned to the UK for treatment.

The money helped Mr Plummer's family secure a temporary loan and he was flown home by air ambulance this week.

The musician, 32, is in Maidstone Hospital after a 22-hour airborne battle to keep him alive.

Paramedics feared losing him twice, once as his temperature rocketed and during the stress of landing at Stansted. He is also fighting MRSA.

Adrian Walker, his brother-in-law, said: "The response was out of this world, amazing. We would like to say a massive thank you."

The family has raised £22,000 of the £80,000 to cover the medical costs. They have three months to find the rest or risk Mr Plummer's parents, June and Eric, having to sell their home.
