Cyclists travelling on this route in New Kent Road near Elephant and Castle will be in no doubt they are on the right track.

Workmen used gallons of white paint to emboss hundreds of bicycle symbols and "slow" warnings along the path.

The measure has surprised some cyclists, who said the signs were overkill.

One said: "We all know it's a cycle path, so why do they need to remind us every couple of feet? It's a bit excessive."

A spokesman for Transport for London, which carried out the work, did not comment.
