South Korea celebrates shock win

12 April 2012

Hundreds of thousands of ecstatic South Korean fans roared and danced in the heart of their capital today to celebrate their place in the quarter finals.

Their team produced the biggest shock of the World Cup so far as they sent Italy tumbling out of the tournament with a golden goal.

Multi-coloured fireworks erupted from office blocks in the centre of Seoul where police estimated some 1.1 million fans - almost all clad in team-colour red T-shirts - had gathered to watch the second-round match on giant television screens.

Deliriously they yelled team chants as pop music thudded across the city - scenes that were repeated in Taejon stadium and all across the country.

Cars honked their horns and passengers waved South Korean flags out the windows as Seoul prepared to party until the early hours.

But the party may be shortlived - the co-hosts will now face Spain in the quarter-finals.

Bookmakers William Hill slashed the odds on the co-hosts winning the cup to 16-1. South Korea, 66-1 on Monday, were priced at 50-1 before the game.

Turkey, who were at 50-1 on Monday, were reduced to 20-1 after their 1-0 win over the other co-hosts, Japan.

Brazil, who face England, moved out from 2-1 to 12-5. England are at 100-30.
