Royal Court goes in to bat in Peckham

12 April 2012

The Royal Court theatre is to take up residency in a former cricket bat factory in south-east London as part of an outreach project taking plays to alternative spaces.

Theatre Local, which opens tomorrow and is in its second year, will feature two new plays in a "pop-up" theatre at the CLF art café at the Bussey Building in Peckham.

There will be workshops for budding writers and the Peckham community in a bid to engage new audiences with theatre.

The residency opens with Truth and Reconciliation, a new play by Debbie Tucker Green, which explores the stories of people in conflicts around the world. It will also feature the premiere of The Westbridge by Rachel De-Lahay, a graduate of the Royal Court's Young Writers Programme.

Artistic director Dominic Cooke, said: "The Bussey Building feels likes the perfect base from which to continue this venture, a former cricket bat factory with a burgeoning arts and culture scene."
