Celebrity chef John Burton Race has revealed that as he faced financial ruin Gordon Ramsay tried to buy his restaurant for a bargain price.

The New Angel in Devon was closed by Burton Race's former wife, Kim, while he was in the jungle in the hit TV show I'm A Celebrity ... Get Me Out Of Here!

Kim, 42, also sacked the 20 staff to fund their £3.6million divorce, amid rumours that the chef owed almost £1million to creditors.

But Burton Race, 50, is now back in business after finding financial support from internet entrepreneur Clive Jacobs, who made his fortune with lastminute.com.

Yesterday the chef revealed that Michelin-starred Ramsay had put in a bid for The New Angel – which was worth £1.3million – but he had rejected it.

He refused to say how much Ramsay offered, but added: "I think he did it because The New Angel is quite an established restaurant and he wanted something ready-made to put his people in to run."
