Radio host Jon Gaunt contests sacking over ‘Nazi’ jibe

12 April 2012

Radio presenter Jon Gaunt, who was sacked for calling a Tory councillor a "Nazi" and "ignorant pig" on air, told the High Court today it was a breach of his human rights to condemn him.

He is backed by pressure group Liberty in what has been described as a case vital for free speech. Gaunt, 39, claims the right to freedom of expression under the European Convention on Human Rights and is seeking to overturn the decision by Ofcom to uphold complaints against him.

He was sacked after more than 50 complaints about his Talksport radio show in November 2008 when he challenged the decision by Redbridge council to ban smokers from becoming foster parents.

The hearing is set to last two days.
