Police granted more time to quiz baby murder suspects

13 April 2012

Police were granted further time today to question four people over the murder of a 17-month-old baby.

Hugo Wang was taken by ambulance from a house in Salford and admitted to Manchester Royal Infirmary unconscious and suffering multiple injuries, including serious head injuries, on Thursday.

Hospital staff contacted police after seeing bruises and marks on the injured baby's body. Hugo was later transferred to Pendlebury Children's Hospital in a critical condition but died shortly before 5pm on Friday.

Two men, aged 38 and 28, and two women, aged 28 and 27, were arrested at a house in Frank Cowin Court, in Lower Broughton, Salford, several hours after Hugo was admitted to hospital, initially on suspicion of assault.

Police said Hugo's parents were not among them, but it is understood the four people arrested are known to the child's family.

A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police said: "Officers have been granted a warrant of further detention to allow them to continue questioning four people arrested on suspicion of the murder of 17-month-old baby Hugo Wang."

Detectives have until tomorrow evening to finish questioning the suspects or release them.
