Pakistan border battle kills 58

An all-day battle between 200 militants from Afghanistan who crossed into Pakistan and attacked a checkpoint left 23 troops and 35 insurgents dead.

The north-west border is a stronghold of al Qaeda and the Taliban. Lt-Gen Asif Yasin Malik said the Kurram tribal area would be the next target of a military offensive after pressure from the US and requests by local leaders.
