Omelette puts the egg in extravagant

In a a city of power lunches and expense accounts, a new extravagance is on offer to New York diners - a $1,000 (£565) omelette.

The six-egg creation is filled with lobster and 10 ounces of sevruga caviar. Chefs at Le Parker Meridien hotel have named it the Zillion-Dollar Frittada.

There is just one snag - no one has ordered the omelette, which has been on the menu for two weeks. "Every six months we come up with new dishes," said the hotel's manager Steven Pipes.

A budget version of the omelette, with one ounce of caviar, costs $100 (£56). Mr Pipes said: "Since we knew it was going to be a very expensive dish we decided to have some fun with it. It's not just a gimmick, though. It tastes good."

The ingredients are: six eggs; one tablespoon of chopped chives; one-and-a-half tablespoons of butter; one lobster; five tablespoons of heavy cream; 10 ounces of sevruga caviar.
