The O2 has been named the world's most popular music venue for the fourth year in a row, outselling its nearest rival by more than 50 per cent.

The Greenwich arena, which opened in the former Millennium Dome in 2007, sold 1,737,654 tickets last year.

New York's Madison Square Garden sold 1,152,792 and third-placed Manchester Evening News Arena 1,077,620.

The O2 previously sold 2,349,952 tickets in 2009, according to annual figures from concert magazine Pollstar.

The O2 staged a 12-night stint by Bon Jovi and shows by Lady Gaga, Gorillaz, Rod Stewart, Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck.

David Campbell, president and chief executive of AEG Europe, owner and operator of the O2, said it was "thrilled" with the ticket sales figure after a "tough economic year".

Mayor Boris Johnson, said: "The incredible success of the O2 is a tribute to its excellent management and staff."
