Mother traced after dead baby found in bin

Detectives investigating the discovery of a baby's body at a railway station have traced the mother of the child.

A teenage girl has come forward and is now receiving treatment, Hampshire police said.

The white baby girl was found wrapped in a plastic bag inside a bin by a cleaner at the front of Fleet station in Hampshire on Wednesday.

Detectives said today they were continuing to investigate the tragic case and are working closely with the girl and her family to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident, which is a murder investigation.

Detective Superintendent Jason Hogg said: "This is an extremely difficult case for everyone involved and we would ask people to respect this family's privacy as they come to terms with what has happened."

Initial investigations found that the baby had only recently been born and had suffered significant injuries that were not caused during childbirth.

A full post-mortem examination was carried out at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London yesterday by a specialist Home Office pathologist to find out how the infant died. The results have not been released by police.
