More volcanic ash forces closure of British airspace

12 April 2012

Holidaymakers were advised to contact their airline before leaving home today as parts of the UK's airspace were again closed due to volcanic ash.

Renewed activity by the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull has closed airspace over parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, and it is feared the cloud could move further south today.

"Things are changing very quickly, and it's very hard to predict what the last mile of the ash cloud will do," said a Civil Aviation Authority spokesman. "We advise people to check on the latest situation before leaving for the airport."

Experts have predicted that continued seismic activity and northerly winds will drive the ash over Britain periodically for months to come.
