Mmo2 links up with Japanese

13 April 2012

MOBILE group mmO2 is expected to link up with Japanese giant NTT DoCoMo to strengthen its hand in the rush to win high-spending phone users.

The former BT Wireless is tipped to become the first British operator to license DoCoMo's advanced i-mode mobile internet service. The technology is used for receiving video and data by phone.

An mmO2 team is in Tokyo for meetings this week. DoCoMo has been searching for a British partner for a year after signing up operators elsewhere in Europe.

It has 40m subscribers in Japan, where i-mode has kept it ahead of Vodafone.

DoCoMo sold its 20% stake in 3 back to owner Hutchison Whampoa after 3 refused to take i-mode. It has also had tentative discussions with Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Mobile, which is soon to float.
