Man to face court on Olympics streaking charge

25 July 2012

A man will appear in court today accused of streaking during the Olympic torch relay.

Daniel Leer, 27, from Lawson Road, Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, will appear at Oxford Magistrates' Court charged with indecent exposure.

The incident which led to Leer's arrest happened as the flame was carried through Henley on July 10.

A naked man with Free Tibet written on his back was seen to run a short distance close to the torch which was about to be taken by Sir Steve Redgrave on the River Thames.

Witnessed by crowds gathered to see the relay, video clips of the incident appeared on the internet almost instantly.

Afterwards, the torch was carried on a rowing boat along the River Thames by Sir Steve, a five-times Olympic rowing gold medallist, who travelled through Henley-on-Thames in an eight-man boat using an oar with one hand.

Following his arrest, Leer was released on bail.

The 70-day Olympic Torch relay, which has seen the flame travel the width and breadth of the UK, will come to an end on Friday when the flame arrives at the Olympic Stadium in Stratford, east London.

By the time it reaches its destination it will have been carried for 8,000 miles by 8,000 torchbearers through more than 1,000 communities.
