Man, 54, on trial for murdering two women and throwing bodies in canals

A 54-year-old man will go on trial at the Old Bailey today accused of murdering two women whose dismembered bodies were found in canals.

The body of Paula Fields, 31, was found in the Regent's Canal, in Camden, in 2001.

The remains of Melissa Halstead, 33, were recovered from the Westersingel canal in Rotterdam in the Netherlands in 1990.

John Sweeney, of no fixed address, denies two counts of murder.

The trial before Mr Justice Saunders is expected to last at least a month.
