Detectives today released this shocking picture of the victim of a vicious gang attack on a London-bound train.

Michael Ogbuehi, 20, is pictured in a coma in hospital — six months after the attack which left him fighting for life.

His girlfriend Mollie Jones, 17, seen here with him, today joined police in an appeal to catch the gang of youths who carried out the attack.

Mr Ogbuehi, of Chalkwell, Essex, was attacked on a train while travelling between Southend and Benfleet on Friday, 29 May.

A fight broke out between the gang and Mr Ogbuehi, who was punched and kicked in front of his heavily pregnant girlfriend. He was able to return home but several days later experienced severe headaches and went to hospital where he collapsed in a coma.

Doctors say he suffered severe brain damage and his chances of making a recovery are poor.

Ms Jones gave birth to his baby daughter, Ava, a few days before he collapsed. She said today: "Each time I visit the hospital I hold Michael's hand and talk about the good times and about how our gorgeous baby girl is getting on. I will always remember him as a strong, fun-loving person, who was full of life. It's so difficult to see him like this."

She added: "I would urge anyone who saw what happened to please come forward and talk to the police."

Today British Transport Police released CCTV footage (see below) from Southend station of possible witnesses to the attack, which took place between 9.40pm and 10pm, who they urge to contact them.

There have been 23 arrests, 18 men and five women, aged between 15 and 21. Most are from the Tottenham area.

Detective Superintendent Ashley Croft, who is leading the investigation, said: "It is important that people know what has happened to Michael. A previously fit and healthy young man, now a father, lies in a hospital bed with life threatening head injuries.

"Anyone who was on that train should contact us with any information they have — no matter how insignificant they think it is. Their help could be vital." Some of the gang are thought to have got off the train at Pitsea, while others may have gone on to London.

Anyone with information is asked to call British Transport Police on 0800 405040 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
