London bike hire scheme's first docking station is live

12 April 2012

Cyclists were today given the chance to test some of the Mayor's hire bikes when the first docking station was switched on beside the Globe Theatre.

Transport for London has begun educating riders on how the "Boris bike" scheme works in advance of its official launch on Friday morning.

Cycles can be removed from up to 400 docking stations by using a £3 electronic key, which can be ordered - with a daily, weekly, or annual subscription - from the TfL website. More than 9,000 people have registered for the scheme.
