Light relief from heavy metal

James Burleigh12 April 2012

With bright lights flashing and pyrotechnics exploding all around, heavy metal screamer Bruce Dickinson will be in his element tonight as he turns on the Christmas lights at a pub in Battersea.

For some, the religious significance of the occasion could seem somewhat at odds with the appearance of the lead singer of Iron Maiden whose songs include The Number Of The Beast, Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter and Judas Be My Guide.

But Katie Reed, manager of the Settle Inn on Battersea Bridge Road, sees no clash of cultures. "We got Bruce Dickinson because one of our regulars is roadie for Iron Maiden.

"More than 4,000 white lights have been strung up in three layers all over the exterior of the building so it will look like Harrods - but better. To be honest it's absolutely ridiculous."

The lighting-up will be followed by a £4,500 firework display. Proceeds from the event will go to Surrey PHAB, a charity for both physically handicapped and able-bodied people.
