‘Liar Liar’ song about Theresa May in race for number one will not be played on BBC radio

A song brandishing Theresa May as a “liar” which is in the race for this week’s number one spot will not be played on the radio due to impartiality rules.

The damning song was released on Friday and by Monday had reached number two in the iTunes singles chart.

It was briefly number one on the iTunes download chart on Tuesday but was pushed back down to second place by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s ‘Despacito’ track featuring Justin Bieber. It was Amazon’s most downloaded track on Wednesday lunchtime.

The song features clips from Theresa May’s speeches and the chorus: ‘She’s a liar liar, you can’t trust her, no, no, no.’

The Official Singles Chart said that by Wednesday, 30,000 people downloaded the track, while the song has been streamed more than 100,000 times. It is expected to be the highest new entry in Friday’s Official Top 40 Chart show on BBC Radio 1 on Friday.

But Radio 1 has ruled out playing the single because the UK is in an election period.

The station said in a statement: “We do not ban songs or artists, however our editorial guidelines require us to remain impartial and the UK is currently in an election period so we will not be playing the song.”

Captain Ska is donating its proceeds to food banks around the country and campaign organisation The People’s Assembly Against Austerity.

The band said in a statement: "The success of this song shows people are fed up with this government of the rich, for the rich. We’re overwhelmed with the support and our message is that people do have the power to change society if we act together.”
