James Beattie slides in hard times

JAMES Beattie, the Midlands department stores chain, said it remains in 'challenging times', particularly in retail, as it saw its pre-tax profit for the year to 31 January fall to £8.67m from £9.76m.

Pre-tax profit excluding pre-opening costs and property profits was £9.56m against £9.63m on turnover of £128.4m, compared with £114.2m.

The company said total sales in February and March were 14.1% ahead of last year. Like-for-like sales are 1.6% lower than in the same period last year.
