Disgraced Met police chief Ali Dizaei is the victim of "a package of deceit" involving the entire family of the key witness against him, the Appeal Court was told today.

Dizaei was jailed for four years last February for misconduct and perverting the course of justice after being found guilty of wrongfully detaining Mr Waad al-Baghdadi in a dispute outside a Kensington restaurant.

But he is appealing against conviction on the grounds that Mr Baghdadi gave a false identity on oath in court.

In a short preliminary hearing today, Michael Mansfield QC, representing Dizaei, suggested that at the time of the dispute with Dizaei, Baghdadi was using a bank card and account in the name of his dead father. The case continues.
