Hugo Chavez goes quiet after operation

The normally highly visible Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez has worried supporters after going silent following an operation in Cuba to remove an abscess in his pelvis.

Mr Chavez, 56, has not been seen or heard from since this picture was taken last week - when Cuba's revolutionary leader Fidel Castro and his brother Raul, Cuba's president, visited him in hospital.

Mr Chavez's brother Adam appeared on television today to reassure voters, saying: "The president is recovering in a satisfactory manner."
