High-speed train hits the buffers

A high-speed train that would add hundreds of seats to one of the most overcrowded cross-country routes out of London will be mothballed for at least a year.

The 569-seat Pendolino train, which has a top speed of 140mph and was hoped to make its debut next year, is in storage in Liverpool after the Government refused a two-year contract extension with Virgin Trains.
