High Street cheer - but not for M&S

13 April 2012

MARKS & Spencer will this week reveal a further fall in sales - just as new figures show a slight increase for the High Street as a whole.

Analysts estimate M&S's sales of fashion and home furnishings were down by as much as 7% over the quarter to the end of March compared with the same period last year.

Food sales fared slightly better, but like-for-like sales were still thought to have fallen by about 1%. Analysts predict that overall like-for-like sales will be down by 4% compared with a 6% fall in the previous quarter. M&S said: 'Those are the analysts' estimates.'

On the same day that M&S unveils its figures, the British Retail Consortium's monthly survey is expected to show sales up by about 2%, boosted by the early Easter.
