Harriet Harman wants 11-day break for MPs at half-term ... but it’s for ‘work’

Proposal: Harriet Harman
12 April 2012

The Government risked public outrage today by pushing for an 11-day break for MPs only a month after they return to Parliament from their constituencies.

Commons leader Harriet Harman has tabled a motion for the House to rise for half-term between 10 and 22 February. She said the latest break was not a "holiday" and that it was for MPs to do constituency work.

But Tory and Liberal Democrat party chiefs are to advise their MPs to oppose extending the latest recess by a day when it is voted on next Wednesday.

Some MPs are concerned it sends the wrong message to constituents after the expenses scandal and as Britain struggles out of recession, with many people working longer hours to make ends meet or keep their job.

Cabinet ministers have also stressed the Government will show "laser-like focus" on dealing with the nation's economic and other problems.

Lib-Dem MP Norman Baker said: "It does nothing to enhance the reputation of Parliament either to be having thin sessions or extended time away."

Senior Tories have proposed MPs work a longer week in Parliament and give up part of their summer break.
