Chinese sailor Guo Chuan has gone missing while attempting to break the world record for crossing the Pacific alone.

Mr Chuan’s support team say they were last in contact with him at 7am GMT on Tuesday.

The US Coast Guard is looking in waters off the coast of Hawaii where Mr Chuan’s empty boat was reportedly spotted.

Chinese state news agency Xinhua reported that Mr Chuan’s boat had been spotted with a broken mast near the island of Oahu.

Mr Chuan was not seen on board.

Mr Chuan set out from San Francisco on 18 October with an aim of reaching Shanghai within 20 days. The current speed record for the journey is 21 days.

In 2013 Mr Chuan became the first Chinese person to sail around the world solo.
