Germans get shirty over taxes

12 April 2012

Germans angry at Chancellor Gerhard Schroder's plans to raise taxes are deluging his office with old shirts.

The "last shirt off my back for Schroder" campaign was launched two weeks ago by Christian Stein whose website offers T-shirts for sale, which read: "I am wearing this T-shirt because Schroder has my last shirt."

Schroder has already received 9,000 shirts, which have been sent on to charity shops.

The campaign comes as a song mocking the Chancellor's broken election promise not to raise taxes spends its third week at the top of the German charts.
