Four die as storms batter Britain

Rob McNeil12 April 2012

Four people died in the storms which battered Britain over the weekend and which left transport systems in chaos and thousands without electricity.

Two climbers died in an avalanche on Beinn Dearg in the Scottish Highlands. The bodies of Ian Collier, 42, and Douglas McQuaker, 35, were found after they failed to return from a climbing trip.

A 58-year-old man died when he was hit by masonry blown from a building in Glasgow and a 56-year-old woman was crushed when rubble was blown from a building in Rugby.

Hundreds of trees and power lines were brought down in the South-East, closing roads and bringing the rail network in many areas to a standstill. Scaffolding was blown on to a lorry in Victoria and on to a bus in Hackney.

Snowstorms swept across the north and there will be more high winds there today. However, forecasters said the South would escape the worst of it.
