Popular figure: Father Bennett marries a couple at St Fagan's

The 23-year-old appeared before Aberdare magistrates to confirm his name, date of birth and that he lived in a block of flats overlooking Father Bennett's church, St Fagan's.

Father Bennett, 59, was ordained 20 years ago after working as a printer since leaving school.

He lived at the vicarage with wife Georgina, 58, disabled son Nigel, 34, daughter Emma, 32, and her 11-yearold son John.

Before the hearing, the clergyman's family issued a statement.

It said: "Paul was a loyal son and a devoted husband, father and grandfather, who spent his whole life putting the thoughts and feelings of others ahead of his own.

"He lived his life for his people and cared deeper than anyone can imagine for his church.

"We loved him dearly and cannot imagine life without him. All we can hope and pray for is that he hasn't lost his life in vain."

Evans was led into court in handcuffs

According to police sources, Mrs Bennett heard raised voices after her husband-answered the door on Wednesday. She dashed outside to find him being attacked and tried to protect him, but nothing could be done to save him.

The vicar's parents Tom, 84, and Anita, 85, were visiting him at the time.

Their son has been praised as "devoted and selfless" by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Hundreds of his parishioners have paid tribute at a makeshift altar in the church hall.

A police source said of Evans: "He's something of a religious fanatic."

A neighbour, Peter Quick, 55, added: "He has only lived in the village for 12 months. He is a loner and doesn't talk to anyone apart from his mother, who visits him regularly."

Evans was remanded in custody until March 23.
