Eddie given new heart

12 April 2012

Comedian Eddie Large is recovering after undergoing a heart transplant.

The 62-year-old, who lives in Bristol, became a household name in the 1980s with his Little and Large double act formed with long-term friend Syd Little.
Spokesman Peter Prichard said Large was in intensive care, but was "up and joking" with his wife Patsy at his side.

The lengthy operation took place yesterday at an undisclosed hospital.

"The old heart was working, but it was knackered," Mr Prichard said.

"He's had a heart transplant operation and it's proved successful. He's recovering in intensive care and he's up and joking."

Large, who was treated in hospital last year for his heart condition, had been waiting for a new organ for around a year.

"The act hasn't been able to work since then. It's important with showbusiness to get back," Mr Prichard said, adding that Little and Large were hoping to return to the stage soon.

"He's been under the doctors for a long time. He woke up this morning and the first thing he asked was whether Manchester City had signed any new players. He's a nut for Man City."

He added: "He's feeling a lot better and he's hoping to go back on the road."

It is not yet known how long Large will remain in hospital. Little - real name Cyril Mead - who lives in Lancashire, was said to be "thrilled" that his colleague's surgery went well.

"They're old friends. They speak on the phone every day," Mr Prichard said.
Large was born Edward McGinnis in 1941 in Glasgow, but his family moved to a red brick terrace house opposite Manchester City's Maine Road stadium when he was just 10 years old - prompting a long-held love for the club.

The Little and Large act was created when the pair met in 1963 at a pub in Wythenshawe, Manchester.

They went on to win the Opportunity Knocks show in 1971 and were given their own BBC TV series - The Little and Large Show - in 1977. At its peak it attracted audiences of up to 10 million.

The sketch series was dropped in 1991, leaving the pair to tour the club circuit.
